Gizmo walks again!
Posted in Family & Friends with tags FCE, red kelpie on August 23, 2011 by beatricebellaHi all. Great news – after a week at the vet specialists at the Gold Coast where he had intensive physiotherapy, Gizmo has improved enormously regaining limited use of his hind legs! We are so excited to see that gorgeous big red tail wagging again! Whilst it’s early days the future is looking very positive for Gizzy.
A huge thanks to Dr Gordon Corfield and his fantastic team at Veterinary Specialist Services (Carrara) – we couldn’t recommend them more highly!

Gizmo update
Posted in Family & Friends with tags FCE, kelpie on August 14, 2011 by beatricebellaHi all
Thanks for all of your warm wishes for Gizmo’s recovery. Latest news is that after showing no improvement on Friday Gizzy was transferred to a specialist vet centre at the Gold Coast where he was assessed by an orthopaedic surgeon. He has lost use of his hind legs from half-way down his spine which we were told could be due to two conditions – FCE (fibrocartilaginous embolism) or a herniated disc. He can still feel pain from his feet and tail but cannot move them. After a myelogram (a test using injected dye to observe soft tissue around the spine) was performed on Friday night the doctor said Gizzy has likely suffered an FCE. This is when a small amount of debris (possibly from around the disc) block a blood vessel supplying blood to the spine.
So people the next 3 weeks are a waiting game – some dogs partially or fully recover during this window and others don’t. The treatment is physiotherapy, patience and love. Lucky for Gizzy Grandpa and Grandma have plenty of these to give. Gizzy is still in hospital on the Gold Coast until early next week and is having intensive physio. He’s missing home and is a bit confused about what is going on but is such a brave boy and is in pretty good spirits.
Anyway that’s all for now people – again thank you all for your kind thoughts & well wishes.
Bella x

Happy 1st birthday Dougal!
Posted in Family & Friends with tags birthday, vizsla on August 13, 2011 by beatricebellaSending our love to Gizmo
Posted in Family & Friends on August 12, 2011 by beatricebellaTerrible news tonight people that one of my very best friends, the big red beautiful boy Gizmo, is badly injured.
Gizzy was playing in the garden with grandma yesterday when, after a quick (but normal) movement to chase a ball, he suddenly became paralyzed in the back legs. Grandma and Grandpa rushed him straight to the doggy hospital however there has been no improvement today.
D and I have been using all our special vizsla powers of affection to send our most loving thoughts to poor Gizzy (and Grandma & Grandpa who are devastated) over the 200 kilometre distance that separates us tonight.
Gizzy we love you sooooo much…please know we are thinking of you – please get well soon. All my lovingest licks, Bella x
